The other thing to remember is that with my HP4150 I can send and receive mail. But for some reason if I configure another account using the same settings - it doesn't work. I get the same message. That's what's really weird

That is really weird. Can you back up the device (there's probably a backup utility in ROM if it's pre-WM5) then hard-reset it (wipe out all data and restore it to factory-fresh state) and reconfigure the e-mail? If it works then, you can reinstall the apps on it one by one and see if one "breaks" the email. If the experiment is a total bust (e-mail still doesn't work right away) you can restore from the backup file and be right back where you started.

I think the ppc (HP4150) is capable of backing up (haven't a spare sd card - will get one tomorrow)

The e-mail message sounds like a typical "bounce back" message from an e-mail provider saying a message was undeliverable, and doesn't seem to be generated by your PPC.

As for bounce back. I called Demon (service provider) on the phone and had them look at my data coming out. They said the error message comes up so fast that it wasn't even getting to the router

Weird. I'm not aware that PPCs can gererate their own bounceback e-mails,, so something weird is going on.

Not without a lot more information. Typically problems sending are incorrect SMTP settings, or trying to send mail through a foriegn server (one other than your ISP.)

SMTP settings are correct and were confirmed when I had my service provider on the line

Ok. I assume you can send e-mail from your PC when using the same internet connection/router and it's connected to Demon? Demon's help pages indicate that you can only send Demon e-mail when connected to Demon (that's a typical ISP SPAM-control measure, particularly when they don't use SMTP authentication), so it probably won't work when connected to other WiFi APs (unless they coincidentally happen to be on Demon as well.) Are you certain the device is connecting to your own router and not, say, a neighbor's on a different ISP?

I have noticed neighbor's routers before but I'm definitely using my router

Ok, but again, has it ever worked for YOUR e-mail account and suddenly stopped working, or has it never worked (except for your buddy's e-mail?)

I think it has worked (HP4700) I'm about 90% certain. It's been such a long time since it may have worked (early last year). The problem is that I was sending emails out but not aware that they weren't being sent until a few months ago

For anyone here to troubleshoot, you'll probably need to tell us (at the very least!) who the mail provider is, and what settings you've entered.
User info:
my name - xxxxx
user name - xxxxx
password - xxxxx

then account type = pop3
name = xxxxx

server info:

incoming mail = pop3.demon.co.uk
outgoing mail = post.demon.co.uk
domain = xxxxxx

I saw no reference to having to enter a domain name on Demon's site. Is that field blank or populated?

I've tried with and without my domain name
options
(don't need to config. because of the type of account I have - says my service provider )

It would seem that way based on the website- Demon's settings are simple enough.

The error message you were getting sounds like you were attempting to run the PC version of the installer on the PPC directly.

The .cab file download is here:
http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-pocketpc-cab

Tried this but didn't worked

Tried .cab file - still made no difference (not sure if it is the one you've listed
will try this one shortly

Is your 4700 running WM2003 or WM5? IIRC, the newer versions of Skype run on WM5+ only. You might have to email Skype and see if they'll send you an older version for WM2003. (The Skype site has VERY little info on the PPC requirements, but IIRC, they used to offer separate versions for the different WM revisions.)

WM2003

what is IIRC?

Download that file, copy it to your device and try to run it. If Skype isn't compatible for your device, you can try Fring at www.fring.com, an alternate VoIP provider who's all-in-one VoIP app lets you make and receive Skype calls as well as a number of other VoIP and IM providers.

Sadly, I probably gave bad advice there- I think Fring is for WM5+ only as well, so if the device won't run Skype, it won't run Fring either...

Yep, no signs of ppc downloads
Good luck!
