It turned out I didn't have to try either.
I was preparing to try your 1st suggestion and I thought of edit one of my monthly recurring tasks and sync to computer before attempting either, and surprisingly the overdue count disappeared. Go figure!
Thanks for your suggestions still - I'll remember next time something similar comes up

Two things you can try.
1) In Outlook, create a new TASKS folder and move all tasks to
that. Then sync to your device. This should remove everything
from the device related to tasks. undock your device, soft reset
it and make sure the TODAY screen shows no tasks. If none, move
all the tasks back to the real tasks folder and resync.
2) If that fails, delete the partnership in ActiveSync and
recreate it. You won't lose any data on your device. All PIM data
(tasks, appointments, contacts, etc.) will be purged and then
copied over when you create a new partnership on that first dock.
Just tell it NOT to combine anything, but clear off the device.
