(stays off if off, stays on if on) but with every aftermarket charger I've tried, it switches on when plugged in (or unplugged.) <<

That might indicate that the aftermarket cables are powering the usb 5vdc pin and the device uses usb voltage to assume a sync connection.

I assume it's something like that. My Audiovox Maestro launches Activesync whenever I plug it's sync-charge cable into my AC-to-USB power adaptor!

For example, in a mini usb connector (5 pin) the oem ac (only) power cable probably uses only the additional fifth pin to provide power and the aftermarkets assume usb power and power both that and the usb 5vdc pin.

That might explain why the OEM cable won't charge my wife's Blackberry that also uses a mini-USB connection.

I'm trying to get all of my portable devices to work off of the same chargers for traveling light- I have three mini-USB phones (two WinMo, and the BB,) a BT GPS and BT headset with mini-USB, and two kiddie media players that use mini-USB. My wife's car navigaton system and even her digital photo keychain use mini-USB. (If only the d*mned Zunes used USB, I'd have had it made!)
