Did you say palmist? Hee-hee.
I became a palmist through my doctor wife, herself practically the most
computer-averse person I have ever known under the age of 60. Actually,
make that computer-hostile! A drug company gave her a Palm years ago, but
since she could not figure it out in 30 seconds or less, it lay in a drawer
until her best friend--another doc with the same Palm--dazzled her by
pulling up her address book and calendar--and Epocrates, the database for
doctors--all in that tiny gadget. Within the hour she was hooked! She got
an early Palm phone not long thereafter, which meant carrying only one
electronic device instead of two. Since it worked for her I got myself a
Palm OS phone (the now-obsolete Samsung i500; a flip phone and thus probably
the most compact of all the "smart" phones) that allowed me to receive, send
and sync Outlook e-mail, calendar and appointments through my firm's
Exchange Server. Made a believer out of me. At least for phones.
(Otherwise I was always our firm's most knowledgeable person as to Word and
Outlook) My wife envied that phone so I got her one, too! But as superior
as that phone was in all other respects I never was able to open, let alone
edit Word attachments on that phone. Changing firms offered me the chance
to step up--I figured--to a new level of "convergence." Thus a new phone
and a new cell phone service! Time for Windows iin my hand!
My new WM6 device is like a date you looked forward to for a long time,
maybe even dreamed about. Not usually a good idea in real life. Probably
not for electronics either. What can ever match what you had in your
imagination? Well, nothing. At least not while you are awake. Momma
always said there'd be rough spots but we always tend to forget that, don't
we.
But Momma also said to focus on the good things. Lest that great date start
focusing on the reasons why maybe I am not much of a hot date myself! The
verdict so far: This device is very impressive, but not without some odd
frustrations. My wife? Uses Windows and Office every day at work and at
home. No way is she giving up her Palm phone!

Guess I'll still need that laptop after all! <<
Ran another palmist off did I?
My point was caution rather than abandonment. Any new device has a
learning curve, and, fwiw, think you might be making a mistake by focusing
on the "what nots" rather than the "what cans"
When mobile, it's not perfect but better than any other solution I have
looked at... fwiw, I now travel with only a PPC and no laptop. If you
have highly complex word and excel docs, simply copy them to the non sync
directory before you experiment with them, then compare.
