Most modems you can buy today will have lower performance than one
released 4-5 years ago, because the signal processing is done by the CPU
instead of the hardware. Should most users care?
Yes users should care, not because softmodems or controllerless modems will
be slouches compared to modems with onboard controllers but because by
palming off the controlling functions (and even datapump functions as well
in the case of full softmodems) to the computers CPU(s), users are dependant
on running a compatible operating system (possibly even down to the correct
SP level) that's supported by the modem manufacturers drivers. Users of such
modems will also notice they're often just not as reliable or robust and
tend not to have as many other functions (such as Class 2 Fax support and
Speakerphone and TAM functionality) as full hardware modems..
And if so, should they sue the manufacturer for forcing them to purchase
the softmodem?
It would depend whether the manufacturer advertised it in a realistic
manner. If the buyers were misinformed (perhaps by the manufacturer not
mentioning crippled features that would have otherwise been expected from
the chipset) then whether the buyer was 'forced' into buying doesn't come
into it. If the manufacturer wanted to avoid such legal action all they'd
need to do is unlock the potential which they'd previously not enabled in
the device. In the case at hand that would be by providing drivers to
actually use the chipsets native graphics acceleration capabilities.
Most users don't care about 2D graphics performance. And if you look at 2D
graphics benchmarks for the kaiser and the mogul, you'll find that they
aren't particularly bad, because the CPU is doing the graphics rendering
and the CPU is a whole lot faster than it was 4-5 years ago.
I don't think those users who buy a TyTN II are typical of 'most users'
though. They've bought a premium product and expect premium performance,
nothing less.
