Well, Vista only fully supports WM2003 and up- HPC, PPC 2000, and PPC 2k2
users are left out in the cold.

It's very likely XP will never see another AS update, and any devices that
require a new type of connectivity simply won't be XP-compatible. WM5 and
6 work fine with AS 4.5, and I suspect the next generation (WM6.1) will as
well. After that, all bets are off, IMHO.

Win98 users are locked out of WinMo 5 and 6 (Win98 doesn't support AS 4.x.)

or manufacturers like HTC would
be forced to use other operating systems on their devices,.Microsoft
would be cutting their own throats.

Hardly- HTC rarely offers OS upgrades for their devices- and then only if
they're still being sold when WM versions change. They'd just as soon see
you buy a new device than extend the life of one you own. By the time WM7
rolls around, I suspect the idea of Vista-only hardware and software won't
seem as crazy as today.

I have worked in IT and I don't remember
anything else coming out of Microsoft that was of such poor quality as AS
4.5. If they want sales of Windows Mobile devices to increase, they need
to fix the weak link first!

I'm still running the original beta of AS 4.5 and it's pretty darn stable.
I've never upgraded because of the problems reported here with the release
version of 4.5 and I don't feel the urge to join those having problems...

I installed WMDC on my new Vista laptop, but it's not my primary PC so I
haven't attempted to sync anything. I installed it simply to use my WinMo
phone as a modem with WM6 Internet Sharing. (You've really got to wonder
why we're required to install a 20MB application just to access the 200kb
phone as modem driver! Then again, you could probably ask the Zune team
why I needed 50MB worth of software to load .wma/.wmv files on my Zune when
several hundred "Plays For Sure" devices from dozens of manufacturers
seem to get by with WMP10 or 11 and File Explorer!)
