Looking for FREEWARE lightweight voip for PPC
There's a voip program called picophone for the windows PC.
It's a 57K executable that you just click and it runs.
It creates another 312byte ini file and NOTHING else.
I don't have to install anything. I don't need to download
a new windows installer so I can install dotnet so I can install
more layers of bloat. 57K, and it just runs!!!
Enter an IP address and it calls its counterpart on the other machine.
No proxy servers, no address translations lookups, no nothing...
it just WORKS!!! I can email it and anybody with zero experience
can click the executable and the default configuration just works...
and it doesn't mess up
anything else...and it doesn't need to be installed/uninstalled...
Did I mention, it just works!!!"
Claims to be using GSM 6.10 codec. but also can do truespeech and
MS G.723.1.
I'd like to talk to it from my Dell Axim X51v WM5 pda.
I've tried Fring and other programs, but can't figure out how
to call an IP address. Many of the other options think they want
to install flash or some google thing or instant messaging...don't want
any of that complexity or bloat.
I have no idea what I'm doing and don't know
if picophone is a SIP phone or not.
I don't have to use picophone; it's just an example of the behavior I want.
I want two FREEWARE programs. One that runs on a win98/win2k/xp
desktop computer.
Needs to run using what's available on a fresh OS install without
installing anything, messing with the registry etc. We know it's possible, because picophone can do it.
The other end needs to run on a WM5 (PPC2003 compatibility would give me more
hardware options) PDA. I'm more tolerant
of installation stuff because it's on my end and I'm the only one who
has to deal with the complexity.
I don't want anybody in the middle.
Fring thru voipcheap seems to work. Skype works. But I don't want
the other end to have to deal with all that. I want them to click the
executable and talk to me. Anybody can send me an email. I can get the IP
from the header and call 'em.
Imagine that you have an 85 year old relative 2000 miles away with dementia, a propensity to download and install anything
shiny found on the internet then arbitrarily delete files to get rid of it and you'll understand the issues.
So, is there any FREE voip for the PPC that can talk to a no-install
FREE voip client on a desktop?
Thanks, mike
