You're standing in a pretty long line with that opinion, Beck! ;-)
This irks me even more when I see that the Nokia phone software
DOES allow synching with Vista calendar and contacts. And actually
it works very well indeed.
While the sync process works Very well with Nokias, I've found the actuall
"connection" to a PC with varioys Nokia Suires over the years to be an
absolute pain in the arse! Flaky cables, bad IR and/or bluetooth
connections, etc., all stemming (IMO) from Nokia trying to manage the
connection in their own sofTware, rather than let Windows handle the
connection itself, and the Nokia Suite just managing the data flow. I've
owned probably 20 Nokia phones over the years, and each one if eever tried
to sync was a unique challenge to connect. My "favorite" was a Nokia 3120
that fried my PC's motherboard. Apparently I didn't follow the directions
to plug in the USB cable to the PC first, then the phone. Phone first then
PC made the PC lock up, and never boot again! (Until I swapped main
boards.)
You may have seen from previous posts that I have been having
issues with my windows mobile Fujitsu Loox.
At least it's not trying to immolate you like your Wizard! ;-)
Now if Nokia can implement synching with vista calendar and
contacts, why can't Microsoft? It is their software after all.
Synching Windows Mobile has been problematic from day one. I suspect you
could search the archives of this group and not find a single post that
says "Activesync is a pleasure to use."
I know they say it will be there in the future, but the future is infinite.
More infinite than my patience, that's for sure.
IMO, sadly, WM peaked at WM2003/AS 3.8. After that, we've lost feature
after feature- WiFi/LAN sync, sync by category filter, and the "devil's
deal" trade of speedy battery-backed RAM for slow "persistent" flash memory.
WMDC/AS needs a major overhaul sooner rather than later- particularly in
light of the recent increase in popularity of smartphones outside of the
business world.
Don't get me wrong- I love Windows Mobile, and the capabilities of these
miraculous devices, but I hold my breath every time I plug my WM phone into
my PC wondering what will go wrong this time! What contacts might
mysteriously disappear, which sub-folders of my IE Mobile Favorites will be
emptied, or which unchanged file(s) will report a conflict. This, of course,
assumes the phone actually connects in the first place without a
synchronisation error replete with a generic, inconclusive error code!
Sometimes it's hard to believe AS/WMDC come from the same company that gave
us the Zune, which syncs smoothly, at lightning speed, and as flawlessly
over WiFi as it does via a cable. Heck, if they added a browser, e-mail
client and PIM to my Zune, I might be tempted to leave my PPC at home! ;-)
