Re: Add-on hardware for a PDA? (Thermometer)

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

I need something that has more programming ability than a regular dive
watch. I'll keep hunting for another option.

Hi,

IMO, your best solution is to go in a slightly different direction. You
can get a depth gage/thermometer (dive computer), such as is used of scuba
diving. These record a dive profile, and if you get one that has a serial
connection (either Bluetooth or hardwired) you can write some code that
extracts this data to you PC or PDA. Of course, you'd have to make sure
that the serial API for the one that you use allows it to be accessed
during a "dive."

Sorry, I haven't done this myself... Though I do dive, and do have an
integrated dive computer -- it is old enough that it doesn't provide a
serial connection. However, some Suunto computers have serial
connections -- for example, the Suunto D3 might work quite well in you
application (double check that it has an amibient temperature reading; I'm
not sure). The Suunto Vytec DS has a Bluetooth connection, though it is
expensive because of all of the features, some that you will not need.
