Re: Pocket pcs

In general. Go to 100 sites, 99 of them won't display properly.

Let me disagree. On a low-res (QVGA or even worse) screen, you MUST use some
kind of a one-column or "fit into screen" mode (I've elaborated on what fit
modes there are, in what they are different, what you can expect of them
etc. in the Web Browsing Bible - check it out for more info). On high-res
(W)VGA, you can even see the original pages in their original layout.

In both cases you'll find mostly everything present as in the original page
(even if you can't use the original layout because of the low-res screen)
and, if there aren't major icompatibility issues (for example, the bad
JavaScript support of PIE), everything will work.

Apparently, to Apple, the real internet doesn't use Flash . ;-)
As an experiment after i upgraded to Windows XP I tried going without
Flash. For the longest time I didn't need it, the only stuff that
used it was ads. So I skipped installing it.

But the question is WHY it can't handle a particular website. Flash?
(iPhone is out of luck too) Javascript? (iPhone should do alright
there) Active X controls (SOL again.)
I don't really care why. It should work the day I buy it. I don't
know why the ppc doesn't work with the sites but it doesn't.

Do any of your PPCs have a built-in phone and a data plan? Do you
use Google Maps or WLS for WinMo? Google Maps on a PPC works pretty
much the same as on the iPhone commercial, (except for the PPC's
ability to use a GPS.)
Google won't display period on my ppcs.

Never mind the menu to get over to google maps..

What sites are you going to?
Just about every site. I'd be hard pressed to go to find a site
that works well on this platform.

My PPC phone has a little trouble with
my bank's website and my credit card sites with IE, but Opera handles
them fine.
I haven't tried my bank site, I save that for my home pc which
is set up with Site Key.

(Site key tells me i'm on the real Bank of America site not a phishing
site.)

Apparently so does the iPhone! RCR News (a cellular industry trade
mag) had an article in this week's issue about how a number of
websites, including Google are launching iPhone-specific mobile
versions of themselves. Shouldn't a device with the "real web" not
need such a thing?
Well my ppcs can't handle Google.

Are you using "xxxxxxx" to mean a specific site, or websites in
general? I find PPCs do ok, except with the social networking/video-
laden sites (Facebook, YouTube, MySpace, etc.) which don't interest
me (YouTube now has a mobile site that works on both PPCs and the
iPhone- "real" YouTube doesn't work on the iPhone either.)
In general. Go to 100 sites, 99 of them won't display properly.

How? What method do you suggest to made a 1024x768 display render
"right" on a 240x360 display?
Alot of these sites are just sites with text and photos. At least
the browser should be able to display them.

Even if it can't display the photos at least it should be able to
display the text.
