Well, I think statements like the following:
"From Version 5 through Version 6, Windows Mobile has brought me nothing but
reader complaints. It suddenly dies. It has its own version of the Blue
Screen of Death. It freezes and the only thing that can fix it is to
actually pop out the battery for a minute. It has trouble with ActiveSync.
It has trouble with Wi-Fi. Some versions can run certain apps others can't.
It's not possible to upgrade an existing device from Version 5 to Version 6;
you have to buy a whole new phone. The list goes on."
are not really justified with a (at least comparatively - when compared to
the iPhone and, to a lesser degree, Symbian and Palm OS) open platform like
Windows Mobile. Indeed the lack of Microsoft's forcing a decent QA on device
manufacturers (as opposed to Apple or Nokia) MIGHT be a problem, but that's
because of the non-strict business rules MS is using (again, as opposed to
Nokia & Symbian, let alone Apple, who themseves manufacture their iPhone).
He's referring to some models' crashing - but not the OS. A decent,
knowledgeable user will be easily able to fix these bugs / problems and/or
find a handheld model that runs a given piece of program just fine. Also,
incompatibility issues can easily be tracked. All you need is some knowledge
and experience. A n00b, of course, will have problems - not only on WM, but,
to a lesser degree, on an iPhone or a Nokia as well.
Verdict: in the hand of a decent, knowledgeable user, Windows Mobile is
currently the best and most versatile OS.
