I just got my hands on a HP Jornada 525 Pocket PC and I was wondering if there's any kind of use I can get out of it? Maybe GPS navigation after adding [compatible] bluetooth CF card? Maybe linux?Suggest you use it as is and not put any money into it. It can be a great time waster/tv alternative, just don't let it become a money waster too.
it only runs Pocket PC 2000 (Win CE 3.0)
any kind of ideas would be greatly appreciated
TIA
I had a 548 back in the day. Back when MP3 players cost an arm and a leg, my $5 548 looked attractive. Worked fine except for the short
battery life and the annoying "growl" in the audio. Very difficult to
operate and keep your eyes on the road. Today, mp3 players
will fit in your pocket and run all day...and they're cheap.
I tried a mapping application. Problem was the display. Hard to read in
bright light. Outside on a sunny day, in the shade, I couldn't even
tell if it was switched on. Maybe the 525 has a better display.
548 was too slow for gps real-time tracking via serial port. Bluetooth would be worse.
As for batteries, beware of the cheap Chinese ones. I bought one, too
thick, sent it back. Bought a different one, too thick, cut off all the
plastic, bent the case and crammed it in. Big Mistake. Caused an
intermittent display cutout problem.
Put a slideshow program on it and use it as a picture frame.
Does make a fine simple pda.
If you can pick up a $1 CF card at a garage sale, do it, but don't let
the turkey become a money pit.
