Before blaming the Windows Mobile device, have you tried connecting to your Exchange server from any other computer outside of your local network? Sounds to me like your firewall may be at fault here.
Also, if your server is behind a router, you need to setup port forwarding.

Hi there...
Firstly, here are my system specs...
Windows 2003 SP1 Server running Exchange 2003 SP2 ( fully patched
apart from Windows 2003 SP2 ) behind a Sonicwall firewall with a 5Mb
DSL connection to the Internet.
Vodafone v1605 ( a HERM200 ) PocketPC running Windows Mobile 5.0 with
MSFP ( OS 5.1.461 Build 15671.3.3.0 ).
It's my first attempt to get this ppc syncing wireless with my
Exchange Server for Email, Contact, Calendar and Task, and I'm a
complete newbie at it, so go easy on me. I looked at this procedure...
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/solutionaccelerators/mobile/deploy/msfpdepguide.mspx
and in particular looked at the section about a Single Exchange Server
here...
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/solutionaccelerators/mobile/deploy/msfp_nwalt.mspx
and the section called 'Deployment on a Single Server' found here...
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/solutionaccelerators/mobile/deploy/msfp_config.mspx
which basically told me that for a simple deployment for a small
business ( what we are ) I just need to make sure I turn off SSL and
Forms Authentication on a couple of the virtual directories.
I followed all this, then downloaded and installed ActiveSync 4.5 from
Microsoft, connected the ppc via usb, told it to sync with my Exchange
Server, gave it the name of my server, username etc., chose my
settings for Email, Calendar etc, and it did an initial sync via the
USB cable. All fine so far.
However, when I disconnect the USB cable, I expect it to Push any
exchange changes to my device wireless. I tested it and it wasn't
working. Went into the settings for ActiveSync on my ppc and clicked
on Sync. It got a 3G connection running, but then said...
'Waiting for network'
and if I check the status screen on my ppc, it says...
Result : The server could not be reached. This can be caused by
temporary network conditions. Support Code : 0x80072efd
A search for that code didn't give me any clues as to why this isn't
working. It's been a couple of days now, I've tried messing a bit with
my firewall settings ( even though the 'deployment for a single server
behind a firewall' section of the document doesn't say you have to
change settings on a firewall ), but no joy.
Anyone got any ideas how I can get this working? Thanks!
Jason.
