For the sake of consistency I shall continue the custom of top
posting!!
Out of a reluctance to proverbially swallow my own vomit, I haven't
read this through!
I have an
HP IPAQ 4150
Leadtek 9553
TomTom Navigation 5
I solved it!
note: to see version in TomTom, (like help..about). You have to do
from Main menu,"change preferences"..forward 3 times..."show version"
The quick answer is I had to choose
"Other Cable NMEA GPS" instead of "Other Bluetooth GPS"
(it is a bluetooth GPS. A leadtek 9553 )
There is also a link here from the tomtom site, included below, the
link has instructions how to do it (or one way of doing it).
Here is the long story.. of what i've learnt from my experience with
it.
That was the solution to *the problem*
That makes it work.
The problem had indicators, which i may have referred to as problems
too, in the text that follows.
A problem, and since i've solved it I now know that this was a
problem.
When it's working, when going into TomTom, a bluetooth manager window
pops up with the name of the GPS.. One clicks it, then the status
changes from "No GPS Device" to "No GPS signal" (I was indoors, and
didn't expect a signal. Just a working connection, so that message is
good news)
Note: one must turn bluetooth on beforehand, as with making a
connection to a BT GPS from within any application. With TomTom, even
if you don't, the screen will still pop up, but when you choose to
connect to your gps, it won't connect. It'll just display "No GPS
Device"
What makes it work, makes that thing pop up, when going into it. Is if
you've set it to your type of GPS.
My mistake, was sort of setting it to the wrong type. There are 2
types applicable to my Bluetooth GPS.
I happen to have a Leadtek 9553
According to instructions from TomTom, which I discovered, going to
their site, clicking support. typing something in the search box.
Though I noticed there were about 20 useful links. Link labelled 10
was applicable
http://www.tomtom.com/support/index.php?Lid=1
http://www.tomtom.com/support/index.php?Language=1&FID=3236
"How to manually configure TomTom NAVIGATOR 5 for Bluetooth GPS
receivers. "
I followed the instructions exactly and it worked. But experimenting
afterwards, I realised I could connect a few ways. It wasn't that
fussy. But the mistake I had made was this..
When telling TomTom what GPS I had (something that can be done when
installing TomTom as part of a wizard) Or afterwards (main menu..
In "specify your GPS hardware" (main menu..change
preferences..forward 3 few times..show gps status..configure)
First you are supposed to try this option, to see if this works
"Other Bluetooth GPS".
(I had thought no other option was applicable.
It was that wrong setting, which caused no thing to pop up.)
Then , if that option fails, choose
"Other Cable NMEA GPS"
That was the key!
note: I don't think i had to specify the port, but on my hp ipaq, it
was port 6.
As soon as I chose "Other Cable NMEA GPS" , TomTom behaved a bit
differently 'cos a screen popped up asking me to connect.
The instructions at the TomTom site mentioned one way of connecting,
but it was unnecessary..
On the TomTom link, it instructed the user to create a
On the tomtom site, it instructed the uesr to create a pairing..
(bluetooth manager..tools..paired devices..add..)
give it the name - you cna search and find it..
Give it a password (either 0000 or 1234 or maybe another, whichever
the GPS itself accepts)
And it said to connect (i.e. from the outside).
Firstly, I found that making a pairing wasn't necessary, it works
anyway even without it. A noticable difference was that the screen
popping up in TomTom had a blue question mark instead of a red tick
which it had when there was a pairing. (the blue question mark
perahps indicating no pairing, also worked)
Secondly, you odn't need to connect from the outside. I think when
going into TomTOm, that thing pops up, and it connects from the inside
anyway.
The only advantage of being connected from the outside is perhaps
added assurance that you are connected and the duration. And it does
make sense for that indication to be outside the application(as well
as hopefully in it too).
Connecting from the outside alone, i've found(thanks to another poster
in a previous thread), often creates a problem that it becomes evident
from the status screen, that no data is being sent or received.
Then, after some minutes and seconds, always the same time period, it
disconnects. (if troubleshooting that, you don't have to wait , say,
2 min 24 seconds each time, you can just see no data is being sent and
received, and you know it'll DC again. that's your indication)
With TomTom, whether you connect from outside or not, it will ask you
to connect from the inside.
When you do that connection from the inside, then if you did an
outside connection, that outside connection will suddenly start
working properly, you'll see data being received in the status of the
outside connection, and it won't disconnect after - say 2 min 24
seconds.
It'd be good to know how to turn off te popup thing though (besides
choosing the wrong gps type). I't's quite a nuisance popping up all
the time if I don't want to connect to a gps.
