Can't map to VPN machines outside home router with z2PocketLan

We have had an iPaq 4350 for several years. Using BizzDev NetUse with
VPN I have no trouble using the iPaq to map folders or drives on
machines that are inside or outside our home router/access point.

Last week I purchased a UTStarcom from Bell Canada. Unfortunately
NetUse doesn't work with Windows Mobility 5 so I can't use it on the
Starcom.

I downloaded PocketLan shortly after purchasing the Starcom and am so
impressed with it that I will be buying it shortly. I do have,
however, one mystery that is really bothering me. Perhaps someone can
explain what is happening to me.

With VPN on I can use map folders on all my home machines (behind the
home router/access point). I cannot get the PocketLan to map folders
on VPN machines external to the home network. Everything seems as if
it should work but I keep getting network-path-not-found errors.

I have several computers at home, all on a VPN. With the VPN running
on the Starcom I have no problem sharing folders from computers behind
the same router/access point. I keep getting network-path-not-found
errors however when I try to connect to a computer outside of the home
router area. I have no problem connecting to this computer from any
of the other home computers--and no problem connecting to machines
inside or outside the home router on the iPaq using "Net Use."

If I try to connect to a machine outside the home router with
PocketLAN on the Starcom everything seems fine. If I go to "Scan IP"
select the RAS VPN line and a range of ips I know are among those
available on the VPN server and scan, all computers on the VPN appear
and I can ping them all from their name in the list--including the
"outside" machine. But every time I try to map a share to that
machine I get a "network not found error" on the Starcom (while other
home machines have no problem with mapping shares to the outside
machine!).

I would be grateful if you could help me understand how this could
happen. The only meaningful difference I can see between the ipconfig
page in z2 and the results of an ipconfig /all on the other home
machines is that z2 reports the VPN ip of the Starcom as the default
gateway for the VPN line whereas the default gatewy line in the VPN
adapter line of ipconfig on the other machines is blank.

A couple of other technical notes:

1. On the other home pcs I need to use the fully qualified DNS name to
map to the outside machine. I've tried that on the Starcom with
PocketLAN. It pings fine, but trying to map a share always gives the
network-path-not-found error.

2. tracert on the home pcs gives exactly the same route for the fully
qualified domain name of the external machine as PocketLAN on the
Starcom. In short, as far as I can see at least, everything seems
pretty much the same for the other machines and the Starcom except for
the network-not-found error when PocketLAN tries to connect!

3. BizzDev NetUse on the iPaq connects to all machines, including
machines outside the router, using the NetBios machine names. In
short, it appears NetUse is using machine names from the VPN,
something I haven't gotten any of the home pcs to do--I have to use
the fully qualitied domain name to get a connection to machines
outside the home router so obviously the pcs are using DNS, not the
VPN to get to machines outside the home router.

Can anyone explain why I can't get PocketLAN to connect to machines
outside the home router and how to do so????

Thanks in advance for any help!
