Re: Garmin GPS to PPC serial connection

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

OK I'm thinking you might want to go here and grab this free program http://www.phm.lu/products/PocketPC/DevMgmt/ Device Manager. I'm hopping that it will give you a better idea which COM port you are connected to, on your PocketPC.

Next you can go here http://www.cam.com/vxhpc.html and grab vxHpc you should be able to use this program free for thirty days. All I want to do is verify that you are getting data when the Garmin is power up, and not when it's not power up. Another option is to download CruxView from here http://gpspassion.com/fr/download.asp?dl=21 and put it in and your Garmin in NMEA mode.

You are I believe attempting to use a default port that ActiveSync should be trying to use normally, I would expect to see an error message from ActiveSync or a port not available error message if ActiveSync is running, and normally it would be running in the background.

I am in Southern Minnesota.

I am using a homebrew cable that I made to connect a Garmin GPS to a serial
port on my PC. It includes a null modem but only has T,R and ground as
that's all Garmin supplies. This cable works fine with my PC for exchanging
info with the GPS.

For the PPC I bought a serial cable that is marked "LinkPlus Sync Cable".
This cable works well with Microsft Active sync on my PPC and PC.

Since these are both DB9 female connectors I made up some jumpers with pins
from a DB25 and some teflon insulated wire. I have connected pins 2,3 and 5
on the GPS cable to the same numbers on the PPC cable. In addition I have
jumpered pins 1 and 4 as well as 7 and 8 on the PPC DB9 connector.

I wanted to see if the system would work before I made a custom cable as I
machine the Garmin connectors from a block of plastic to get a low profile
and thats a lot of work.

I am not familiar with software that will let me see the serial stream. Can
you recommend some?

Are you here in the USA? I'm curious as to how you are making the connection
between the Garmin and the PPC6600. Can you include the part numbers? Does
your cable from the Garmin plug directly into the cable from the PPC6600?
I'm asking because I believe that from what you've posted it does. I believe
your first step is installing software that will allow you to look at the
serial stream from the Garmin, just to verify you are attempting to use the
correct port. And you are actually getting data to the PPC6600.
