I don't understand what you mean by "a tie in to a single device id".
But my software is able to search and filter the currently configured
Driver registry settings that are in place and list the port
assignments with also their assigned description. Virtual port
detection is also supported.
A working device driver must be loaded for that port to be functionally
available and listed within the correct "Active" registry group. Even
if the hardware is one device, the registry will hold two entries for
both port types (example: COM1: and IRda sometimes share the same port
chip). This list can dynamically change as serial ports can be added
and removed at any moment by the user.
Still, if a COM1: port (which is usually the built-in rs232 support)
exists; the software *will* find it.
Now, to determine if any other background software might already be
using it though, will simply require the user to try and open it
through PocketDAQ.
Hope this make sense. :)

Since the software cost is (for ppc's) relativly high, can you comment
on the expected life a buyer can expect... for example, you mention it's
ability to diagnose the presence of a serial port on a ppc which could
be an issue if there are software restrictions, such as a tie in to a
single device id, in place.
