In POP3, not much (as opposed to IMAP), albeit Qmail is definitely better if
you have hundreds of mails in your mailbox. Please see

for a full exaplanation.

Aha - I was being confused by the download count. Can I assume that there
is then not much data being transferred? (Concerned over GPRS costs). I'll
look at those other clients too.

Cheers

It doesn't download them one by one, "only" updates them (pretty slowly).
It's only with IMAP accounts that it downloads all the headers, not
POP3's.

If you don't like this behaviour, get an alternate mailer client. See the
Mailer Bible
http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=569&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1
for the alternatives.

I have desktop PC running Outlook which 'leaves a copy of messages on
server' for 3 months as a backup. This means that there are usually about
2500 messages. on the server, even when deleted from my inbox. This is
OK. Emails are handled by external ISP using POP/SMTP.

However, when I run Windows Mobile 2002 email client on my iPAQ, &
download messages, every time it downloads the full 2500 - taking a long
time. Why doesn't it recognise previous downloads, can I stop it, & is
it still a feature on WM5, as I am about to go for a Smartphone.
