Re: Installing applications in ROM WM 2003

I feel rather safe in saying it's just not going to happen short of a WM5
device. The today screen is configured in ram, when the power fails that RAM
forgets, so no today screen icons. Copilot offers an option where you can
install their software on a storage card, put that storage card in a device
that's just experienced a hard reset, and the GPS program will be
reinstalled into your device. But you must call Copilot and get a new
authorization code each time you do this to use your program. That means
after hours and on weekends and holidays it might not work. Even with the
code in ROM or on a storage card, after a hard reset, you'd need to do more
than simply tap an icon on the today screen. You'd have to reinstall the
program to update the part of the program kept in ram.

To my mind you want features that your hardware just doesn't support. I
believe you'd probably be better served by changing your hardware. How
important are future updates to you? If you go with Tom Tom hardware you
might be stuck with limited future updates. Also you should be aware that
generally WM5 devices will be slower than PPC 2003 devices because of the
different way that they use memory.

Everyone, thanks for replying. It is good to read the responses. What
amazes me is that, bar the manufactures of the PDA devices, no company
has been able to interpret the BIN images that seem to make up the ROM
of the N35 device. It seems to me that with the onset of Windows Mobile
5 there would be no need to keep this secret, in particular since WM5
seems to have let go of this system of secrecy in favour of a nearly
open ROM system.

As for backing up the device. This kind of defies the purpose of using
the N35 as a navigation system. To me it was a more attractive solution
than buying a TomTom device. The software in combination with the
hardware was simply a better deal financially. Perhaps I chose wrong.

In any case, if someone knows how to adapt the non-volitile memory or
the BIN images that make up the ROM, I would love to hear from you. My
motives are simple, survive a drain with the TomTom icon where it
belongs: in the Today Screen.

As ever,

Anne.
