Re: Got my Axim X51v

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Be informed I've run into some real nasty bugs in Micro$oft's Win Mobile
5.01 your PDA came with. Worst is it will NOT PAIR with a Bluetooth
headset! I have three from different manufacturers and it will pair with
each of them....BUT, THERE'S NO AUDIO DRIVER TO SERVICE THEM! Stupid,
Micro$not...product not ready for shipment, again. Search Google for a
Dell X51v mic/headset. The jack has 3 circuits, not just stereo, so you
can use them. Cellphone ones have the wrong size plug, of course....

Well, actually, headsets are ONLY meant for phone calls, NOT for constant
connection between the two devices and constant sound routing. That is, MS's
approach is understandable.

There are third-party solutions to this problem as has also been explained
on my blog (see for example
http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=1304&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1 )
; for example, BlueMusic (
http://www.teksoftco.com/products/bluemusic/index.php ). That is, you will
not need to use a cabled headset.

It was waiting for me to put the Axim on the cradle. There was a
dialogue box behind the ActiveSynch box. I was surprised because they
tell you to charge for at least 8 hours first..

Hi, Alan. I just got a new X51v, too! Load Skype for Mobile into it.
www.skype.com Great world telephone service now on your new PDA, mostly
FREE! I bought mine because it's only a tiny more than a new Skype wifi-
direct phone and this one will logon to wifi webpage-based hotspots.

ActiveSync installed in both my main computer and Gateway XP Pro notebook
fine. You don't need to charge the Dell before playing with it. Just
leave it in the charging stand or put the charging plug on the cable and
you can still use it with a dead battery, just like a cellphone. Make
SURE the power switch LED lights up ORANGE when you put it in the cradle.
My cradle's power connector the AC adapter plugs into sometimes must be
rotated to get a good connection for that much current....over 2A. The
power switch will turn green when it's charged. With all the toys turned
on, it'll run about 3 hours actually using it on wifi. You can stretch
that to over 5 with power conservation. Too bad you can't see the
DISPLAY without the light on, like you could your old Palm Pilots...the
price of color.

I called Dell support (Bangledesh?) and asked about the Bluetooth
headsets. They are well aware of it from the hundreds of TS calls and
simply blame it on Micro$not who won't talk to you. "call your
manufacturer" for help. Some help.

This morning, my Axim was just sitting here, playing KPIG on TCPMP, the
finest media player this thing will ever see, unhobbled by lawyers like
VLC. I clicked to look at the browser and the whole video went berserk,
looking just exactly like an old analog TV needing a horizontal hold
adjustment...the picture fell over! Nothing would restore it except a
soft reset. Dell knows it sucks. That's why they have to put a soft
reset button right on the back so you can recover from all the crashings.
You'll find it real quick after today. I did.

There's no WARNING when you click the buttons or touchscreen IF the LOCK
button on the side is LOCKED and you forgot to unlock it. The slider
slides if you use the stock carry case. The zippered leather case (more
money) is much better, of course. If you suddenly seem to find the Axim
running but locked up....slide the lock on the top left side back so you
can't see the red shaft. It locked itself but WM5 never says: "YOU CAN'T
DO THAT, THIS UNIT IS LOCKED." It just sits there like it lost control.
More Stupid, built in.

I don't know what PDA you had before, but I already miss my NEVER
CRASHING ol' Handspring Visor Edge with the FULLY INTEGRATED PALM DESKTOP
that DIDN'T try to force me to buy OUTLOOK, not Outlook Express the
hacker's main target. I use Pegasus for email and Xnews for newsgroups.
So, there is no equivalent PALM DESKTOP with its great, SEPARATE
calendar, contact list, etc., in Activesync, which is just like Palm's
hotsync. If you don't have Outlook, it doesn't do much of anything....
I'm ordering a Bluetooth Keyboard so I can talk to the Axim and it had
better have a damned driver that WORKS so I can enter my contacts/work
schedule/etc. I'm NOT buying Outlook...not even an issue.

CU Later...My buddy in Hawaii just called my Skyped Axim....

C'ya.
