I can't help much with solving your problem but something that was said is a
good idea.

Replacing the ipod (I'm all for replacing as many as these as possible
anyway but) you would use an ear bud earphone right,
I am sure that there are heart rate/ temp monitors that use an ear probe,

being that the cheapest/most robust system would be serial connection rather
than Bluetooth that would make sense to run 1 set of wires and have a heart
rate and temp probe/earphone. With considerable research there is at least
enough for a proof of concept there. If as you were saying you wanted to cut
down clutter that would be an interesting idea. GPS mapping with heart rate
changes for altitude/gradient and placed with body temp/ambient temp and
humidity would be interesting. With data like that you should be able to
plan a run down to the second ;-) Let's see, with a few more probes we could
do internal body temp (they did trials on Australian racing drivers, and I'd
make that one Bluetooth) breathing rate and with the optional add-on cap we
could do brain activity, pupil dilatation and perspiration levels. Now we
have a hat we have a much more robust platform to add extras,

the opposition. Go Go Gadget water bottle ..... damn
that idea's already been done.

On another side note, if you want a real race/fun run try the Kokoda 24,
it's a friendly little event run in the hills not that far from here.
If the altitude doesn't get you the terrain will, perhaps throw in a hands
upim (hold up) just to add to the atmosphere. 10,000 prize money makes the
locals try harder. That's about 5 years wages for a local in their position,
there are some international competitors but still the locals take the
prize. This year 2 local porters beat the competition by over an hour. First
prize is in Kina and probably wouldn't cover airfares from the US..

Just for your info:
The belt just emits a (modulated) pulse for every heartbeat. This
pulse is received by the receiver in the 'watch'. In the watch
everything is processed like computing the heartbeat.

I opened the watch (a cheap version) and found the contact that has
the demodulated pulse. I could connect this pulse with a laptop serial
connector (DTR if i remember correct) and could process this signal in
the laptop (using a VB program).
Note: You better not connect the belt to a computer that is connected
to the net for safety. Using the receiver gives you galvanic
seperation for safety.)

With the VB program (using interrupt) i could not get enough accuracy.
Using a loop to do the timing also does not work as the Windows system
does also alot time to other processes and therfore the looptiming
becomes inaccurate. In DOS it works quite well but the laptop works on
full load which is not a smart way to go.
So i decided to built an interface (with a processor inside) that does
all the arithmetic and sent this to the laptop (either USB, serial or
parallel). I bought already a processor but stopped the project (other
priorities came up).
Just one last note. If you decide to fabricate something to connect
through USB to your PPC then your PPC must have USB-host mode that
most of them have not.
