Seek help: Very slow Activesync under WM5

Maybe I have a "bad habit" taking diary & notes by Outlook's calendar. It
now come up to nearly 5000 items in my outlook folder.
Formerly when I used a HP-6515 PPC which equipped with WM2003, sync between
my notebook and PPC worked fine, only a couple of minutes is enough to sync
all those items from PC to PPC.
But now I updated my device from 6515 to Qtek9100, also from WM2003 to WM5.
I found that Activesync becomes unbearable: even if I cut down the calendar
items to 1000 or a little more than that, yet it definitely must take more
than 20 mins to finish synchronization.
I try another WM5 machine(HP2790), same situation.
Also, I use SuperTasks to monitor all the processes running and found that
the repllog.exe occupys much ratios of the CPU usage while in the ActiveSync
screen(both on PC and PPC) there always shows "Processing" and the real
process is rather slow. What activesync actually do under this "Processing"
status? I don't think its due to the low performance of flash rom(vs.RAM)
because the final pim.vol file is only 2-3M in size.
Can anybody explain how this happen and how to solve?
Anyway, I know that the worst case is going back to WM2003:-(
