Yep, there's plenty of free software that's best-of-breed, or close to
it, even on Windows, Firefox for example (I'd personally say GIMP
isn't a great example, but that doesn't detract from the argument).
Conversely there are vast reams of shareware/commercial software that
are utter rubbish.
In either case, trying software out is the only way to be sure. Even
well-reviewed software can cause problems on a different system to the
one it was reviewed on, or conflict with other software. There's no
excuse, if you're unsure about your ability to fully uninstall
software after trying it, just take a backup before you install it.
