Sven,
Thanks for the update and your later message from this morning.
The GPS is on COM8.
Mine worked flawlessly on my 3 mile commute this morning. Not much of a
test but sometimes it hasn't lasted that long. This is one of those quirky
things that computers find so amusing. :-)
I sent note to DeLorme yesterday. It probably will result in another "we've
never seen this before" but it's worth a try. At this point no one else has
responded to me with reports of a similar problem so I'm beginning to think
it's something unique to my hardware/software/operator combination.
Thanks very much for your efforts.

Yes, the all night was with Pocket Streets, but that is by no means a
capable nav program. You can start with Mapopolis at
http://www.mapopolis.com/demo.jsp?s=1152760672375934&p=&q=1 I did load up
SA tonight and it has been sitting here locked for about 30 minutes so
far. Just sitting on the desk here. It's 2006, right out of the box, so I
don't know what your issue might be now. Would be worthwhile to try a
different program though. There are tons out there, and everyone has a
favorite. good places to look for reviews and impressions are
www.gpspassion.com and http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/ To be honest I never
was too impressed with SA or any of the other DeLorme software. Seemed
like they go out of their way to be different than a typical windows
interface whether on the desktop or the Windows Mobile device. They do
have some neat and unique features. One is that waypoints and routes are
transferable in both directions. Another is that the Handheld software
works with maps cut from a number of desktop apps like their full Street
Atlas and their Topo application. Haven't had any complaints about their
GPS hardware though.
Did it assign itself Comm 8 for you BTW? That's what mine decided on.

Sven, thanks for your continuing interest.
As you suggested, I made a GPS connection in BT Manager without the SA
software. It dropped in about 2 minutes. I then connected again with
BTM and opened SA. It found my location and correctly followed my
movement for about 3 minutes before it again gave the "Looking for GPS
device" message. However, BTM continued to show an active connection with
the Logger for the rest of my drive - about 20 minutes.
SA did finally connect again while I was "fiddling" with things after I
stopped. At this point I don't know what combination of steps caused it
to reconnect but I will try to recreate it.
I agree that SA is probably the culprit. I had a much older "AAA"
version that I liked, but this 2006 version is way too complex and/or not
the least bit intuitive in its operation, both on my laptop and the PPC.
Was the connection you maintained last night using Pocket Streets?
I'll look for Mapopolis. I would like to load state maps on the SD card
for highways as well as street level when I'm traveling. Any other
software suggestions?

For an update here, connection stayed up all night. Have both the 2215
and logger on power of course, but that's like a long trip. You could
try Mapopolis. The software is free and you can download a sample map of
your county that lasts a week or ten days or something like that. Not
sure what GPSGate would do, it is kind of like a signal splitter so it
might not give the desired results. Is something to try though. I have a
gut feel it is a DeLorme issue though. I was never too impressed with
Street Atlas. I do have it, and will try to load it up this evening and
see how it does.

Well bad news and good news. Just setting up the connection and it
would drop fairly quickly. Few minutes at most. I loaded up Pocket
Streets and it has held for 25-30 minutes now. That's the good news.
Gives me the impression that the BT manager doesn't want to hang on to
the connection if there isn't something using the traffic. It works OK
if there is something sucking up the data though. Bad news is that it
would imply that Street Atlas is dropping the connection.
I'm not sure what to try next with this since I don't have any other
mapping software, but I'll do some testing and let you know what I
find. Thanks for your input so far.

You have got
the updates to SA off of DeLormes site right?
I have Street Atlas 2006. The DeLorme website indicates this version
doesn't require the update.
