It is a bit scary. A ROM upgrade essentially replaces your whole OS. It will
be like you got it out of the box the first time so be sure to have
everything important saved in some way. Files copied off, Outlook sync'd one
last time, program registration codes ready for the re-installs, etc. In
ActiveSync you would be advised to delete the old partnership since it won't
be usable after the upgrade, and it won't let you use the PPC name over
unless you have deleted the old partnership. I never recommend restoring
from a backup after upgrading an OS. It works for many, but it seems to me
to be prone with potential problems.
I notice cautions on the site you linked about being careful to use the same
language ROM as you currently have. Do be careful to get the right one.
Maybe wait and see if some more post here to see if anyone else has had
these problems with an Asus and the upgrade actually fixed them. Have you
tried seeing if the SD card being in the unit affects the problem or not? I
recall it being an early WM5 issue that affected some units more than
others.

I recall some early Dell Axims had a similar issue, requiring a soft
reset
to bring out of sleep. IIRC it was related to the memory card, in that it
seemed to work OK if there was no SD card in the unit. later ROM updates
seemed to fix it. Has Asus released any updates for your unit?
