I'm really not a gamer myself, but it seems to me that a particular game
lends itself to being either portrait or landscape. Tetris is tough enough
in portrait, without turning it landscape and having even less vertical
space. First person shooters seem to work best in landscape as it is more in
line with what you are used to in life. More stuff happens left and right,
than up and down. It's nice that some games like solitaire, FreeCell are
orientation aware, but it wouldn't bother me at all if they weren't. I would
say code for the orientation that works best and just make sure it doesn't
crash and you can get back if the screen is rotated. Others may have vastly
different feelings about this.
