Yep! That's how Dell designed it - though why, I have no idea. Really
lousy implementation.
However, no thanks to the intentions of Dell, it is possible to remove
it - kind of. You need to trick the system into thinking that it is
there, so htat it won't copy it again.
Actually when you delete the Odyssey Client, you are only deleting it
in one place, while it exists in two: It is in Program Files, and it
is also in the Windows folder.
Here's what I did that worked:
Before you start, take the following precautions:
1) Backup your device. You can use either Sprite or SPB Backup. Sprite
works perfectly - I've had to rely on it countless times. SPB Backup
creates a backup file just fine, but I have not yet had occasion to
try to restore from an Spb backup yet, so I cannot vouch for its
Restore capability.
2) Copy the ODClient.exe file and store it on a storage card in your
device, or even on your PC. If for some reason your Axim has
difficulty connecting to a network that it worked well with before,
that means that you probably need it after all. Placing it back on the
device where you removed it from would resolve that, if needed.
First, on your desktop PC, open NotePad and create a blank text file -
that it, create a text file with, say nothing but a space in it. Then
save it as the same name as the Odyssey file on your X50v - I forget
exactly, but I think it's ODClient.exe on your X50v, so name the empty
text file, ODClient.txt.
Now, sync your X50v and in Activesync on your PC, click Explore to
open a Windows Explorer window. Now move the file ODClient to your
Axim, anywhere except the Windows folder.
After disconnecting, open Resco or whatever File Explorer you are
using on the Axim - hopefully NOT the default File Explorer. Navigate
to \\Program Files\Funk Software and delete the file ODClient.exe
there. Delete the entire folder, if you wish.
Now find the ODClient.txt file you moved to the device via AS Explore.
Tap and hold the filename and select Rename. All you want to do here
is change the txt to exe. Now you have an empty .txt file that looks
like an .exe file. Still in Resco, or Total Commander if you choose,
cut and paste that empty file to the Windows folder. You will get a
warning dialof telling you that a file with that name already exists
and asking if you want to overwrite it. Click Yes or OK, whichever is
there.
Now perform a soft reset and then take a look. ODClient.exe will
exist, but it's really the empty text file you created. When you soft
reset from now on, you should be OK - it'll stay gone!
That is, of course, until either of the following occurs:
1) You install an upgraded ROM, since the ROM has Funk built into it.
2) If you perform a hard reset, the system is restored to what it was
when you purchased it - which menas Funk will be back.
Repeating the above steps again will remove it again.
As for what the ODClient does, it facilitates connection to networks
using a proxy or VPN. It is primarily needed by corporations that have
such secure networks. If this is not a company device, you almost
definitely do not need it.
If perchance your device will not connect with networks that worked
before, just place the copy of ODClient.exe that you stored on your SD
Card or PC and the Axim will be back to the same config as before you
started.
Good luck! Post back and let us know if you do it.
(BTW, Hi Werner!!)
