The 2700G devices aren't that expensive (they're the Dell Axim x50v/x51v).
They, on the other hand, have a pretty bad screen. It's the good-screen
models (Fujitsu-Siemens and hx4700) that _are_ expensive.

Not necessarily - it has quite a bad screen to be used in Landscape mode.
In
this respect, some other VGA devices are far better. Too bad they don't
have
the 2700G and they're much more expensive.
I do plan to view videos and some photos in landscape mode. But I
have Excel and Word files I want to view in landscape, also. Thanks
for reminding me. I recall that was brought up earlier.
I just spoke with my brother regarding reading scanned documents that
I also want to do, and he said he does fine with is iPaq 4355. But he
does have to zoom in to read some of them. That should be fine with
me, but I still need to see demos to finally make up my mind.
I'll look into the cost of a device with 2700G, but I may not go that
route since I wouldn't be using it enough to justify the cost
difference. But if the cost is not too prohibitive, I'll still
consider the hx4700 series. It seems to get the best review for
screen display (and 4" display at that). There is a Fujitsu I read
about (C550?) but no one around here carries the Fujitsu line of PPC
Actually, I can't find anyone in my area who carries any of the higher
end devices. The best I can find on display around here is the HP
iPaq 2790, but I may just settle for that.
Thanks,
Don

Gaming: if you like racing games, you will want to get a 2700G-enabledI'll check out your blog on this one as well as read more about the

for the PPC but the ones that do exist are very cool. See

Not a lot. Only occasionally will I need to retrieve a document saved

as an image file. I won't even be on the internet for any great
length of time.
However, I do need to get to a store and look at the higher end units
and browse the web a bit to see how they look. Even if I'm not going
to use it for extended periods, I have a tendency to aim high when
purchasing computers - higher than my needs - and I've always been
glad that I did if even for those few moments when it really paid off.
I think you're convincing me to go the route of the x51v. I just need
to see one now.

Although I won't be a heavy user, and I've never owned a pocket pc, I
plan to use Word and Excel for only simple basic things that I can
start and later finish on my notebook. I may also be out in the
sunlight during times of useage.
I'm not a game player, but want to plan ahead and have the capability
to support a game that might come along in high res that might
interest me. I know that's not smart since by that time the
technology we're discussing today may (or will) be laughable.
My only game preferences are racing and flight simulations.
My primary use will be to have access to the internet from hot spots
when I need to do some quick research - primarily accessing Usenet
groups. Also, using GPS software for a quick check on driving
instructions to a specific location in my areas (San Diego to Los
Angeles) So high res is not a priority but if we're just talking an
extra $100.00 or so, I would spend it to get that extra clarity,
particularly when I want to browse the web or read a LOT of text on
the screen.
But I've been interested in purchasing a video iPod for video and
listening to .mp3 files. I know I can't beat the clarity of the iPod
for audio and video, but I'd like to get as close as possible to
having all that and the features of a pocket pc without overspending.
I forgot to mention .mp3 files previously. I also wonder how all
these compare in the quality of sound.
I'm really interested in watching videos (in landscape mode) although,
realistically, not sure when I'd be in those situations where I'm
sitting around with nothing to do but watch a video. I'm thinking I'd
more likely want to use the other features to get work done in my
spare time. But I can't help think I'd be sorry if the video quality
left me wanting something better. My brother has an iPaq 4355 and
although the video playback is not as clear as his Lyra or an iPod,
it's very watchable. So QVGA might be alright with me - ESPECIALLY
if VGA is not significantly better for watching videos
But if the clarity is SIGNIFICANTLY better when using VGA for most of
the other apps, I would opt for the VGA screen.
My only other wish - - - that a pocket pc can be linked via USB to a
pocket hard drive.
Thanks to everyone for all this feedback. I'm still overwhelmed, but
I'm also looking for a new car (let's not get started). Not sure
which is causing me more frustration for me.

I agree with Werner's comments above and would only add one thing.
Are
the applications you are wanting to run compatible with VGA?
I can only go by what I read on the newsgroups and forums, and there I
see where people are finding programs that are supposedly VGA
compatible, but aren't really. They are having to make workarounds to
get a good display. I forget the exact figure of pixels displayed,
but
I was also surprised to find that "VGA" screens on PDAs don't display
true VGA. It's only about half as many more pixels as in QVGA.
For what it is worth, I did a little in-store test once comparing a HP
iPAQ with QVGA (240x320), a Palm TX (320x400) and a hx4700 (480x640).
I expected to see a lot of difference, but didn't. Without looking
very very closely, I couldn't tell the difference between one and the
other for normal text reading, even on some of the smaller font sizes.
Good luck on your search.
Chris
