It must be very refreshing to have to make software that can function
without 1 GB of ram and a supercomputer to run on - much like the early
days where an application could not take up more than 32 kb (!) of ram;
that really had programmers optimize code! And a boot-time of 1-2 sec's!
It's back to the roots.
As far as performance is concerned: as long as people don't start using the
Compact Framework (2) to write apps that need performance (see for example
Webby 2.1 (I recommend my review of it -
http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=652&more=1 ) and IBE
Mail ( http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=629&more=1 ) are
two examples that should not use CF2 because of the poor performance), the
limited system resources forcing programmers to opimize their code is a big
plus.
So is, BTW, simplicity: it is what I love in Pocket PC's - a single human
being can understand everything about them (unlike with desktop PC's), just
like in the good old days of 8-bit home computers.

Whoa! Very interesting thread. Thank you for all the useful input, I have
learnt a lot.
And I am sorry if I might have been a bit harsh when I asked if I really
needed an external card reader to manage the card in my phone. It was
meant as a "nudge" to MS to let me know how to get to the Phone's Format
command.
I actually have a card reader in my PC which by the way also tells me that
the card is smaller than expected. I suppose the card has failed and I
have sent it back under the warranty. If the problem has anything to do
whith upgrading the OS I cannot say, it was just the first time I noticed
it, during all the reinstalling of applications.
It is my belief that MS have applied a different logic when creating the
Windows Mobile OS than when making Windows for PC's; It seems that the OS
has to be as simple as possible and with no way for the ordinary user to
control what goes on under the surface. Very Mac-like in functionality
(Sorry, said the M-word). Luckily for those of us who like to do more with
a computer than just open the box and use it as is, a lot of companies are
doing applications for PPC's which expand and extend it's usability and
thank you for that. I have already in my 18 day career as first-time owner
of a PPC found a lot of really great software to give me more out of the
phone.
