Dought Relief and Radar Blues

This part of the world has been pretty dry for several months, so, there has been no reason to look at weather radar for a long time... until last week...
When I did, I found that all of my long standing ppc links to specific radar image urls were valid, but the dates on the images displayed went back around January 25th and were static.
Checking with my noaa contact, found that they have launched a completely new local radar access site which confounded my first attempts to look at what was generating the much needed drizzle... here's what I have found so far.
extensions off of http://www.srh.noaa.gov/radar/... pointing to specific radar images are broken or will break soon
The routing to your "local forcast" off of http://www.srh.noaa.gov/ now contains a link at the lower right to;
http://www.srh.noaa.gov/ridge/radar.php....
....which is decidedly _not_ ppc friendly as the default page loads...
....however, note the pale "Standard..." tab behind "Enhanced..." tab which, at least works and, the radar backgrounds are white and much more "readable" than the "topo" of the enhanced site but still pretty unmanagable due to the left side menu bar.
The good news is that the page at http://www.srh.noaa.gov/port/ has been highly modified to display the new images and is still ppc friendly...
The old links to the ppc high resolution loops (which work with 2003 and above) now only provide only a static image such as;
http://www.srh.noaa.gov/port/radarhr.php?radar=kmaf
and will have to be modified to go directly to the loop images which now have the address format of (note the "hl";)
http://www.srh.noaa.gov/port/radarhl.php?radar=kmaf
Access to these high resolution loops when running a location lookup via zip code was accidentally omitted and was corrected today.
I'm currently lobbying for a simple ppc friendly "Tap Location" map and will either report back or build my own since coming up with site names much less zipcodes when traveling is far from easy... especially in a moving vehicle.
more as I get more info, Beverly Howard [MS MVP-Mobile Devices]
