Storage folder when no MMC / SDIO card inserted

In attempting to diagnose why my audiovox 6600, Windows mobile 2003,
4.21.1088(build 14132) will not format either a Lead Data MMC 64 mb MMC or
the 256 mb of a San Disk 256mb 802.11b combo card.
Why is there a 'storage' folder on the file explorer with .41mb of data in
the folder that I can't delete?
When I drill into
Settings
Memory
Storage Card
The display shows 14.57 meg of 'total storage card memory with 0.41 mb and
14.16 free.
Questions to the group that may help me diagnose the main problem above.
1).Why is there 'storage card memory' when I don't have anything in the card
slot?
2). When the 256mb SD card is inserted, a 'do you want the storage card
formatted to make it usable' prompt appears. Is this 'normal'? [the MMC
card does not present any format request prompt. Neither is the MMC card
recognized by the Audiovox.
3). The MMC and the SD card are recognized and formatted with windows XP
using Fat16 or Fat32 in addition to being formatted with CMD DOS box to FAT
[fat16] on a 1.6 ghz Intel p4 that has SD/MMC slots on the front of the work
station, referenced as J: drive.
After formatting either card, both have had data stored and retrieved using
the 1.6 ghz workstation without error.
4). How long should the formatting take when YES is replied to the prompt
which occurs on the SD card when inserted into the Audiovox? Currently it
'never' completes.
The Sandisk site was of little help in supplying a suggested solution as
their position is the 256mb WiFi combo card is discontinued, it is no
longer supported and no supported will be provided in the future.
Any Sandisk combo users out there?
