You don't need a third party news server for the MS groups, you can use:
news://news.microsoft.com
For other groups (when I don't use my ISP) I use
news.readfreenews.net
You can sign up for free on their site and get a username/pass for the NNTP
account:
http://www.readfreenews.net/
