This has been voiced strongly to ms since the introduction of wm phone devices.
There are options, not good options but they do work...
text messaging can be sent to any phone number that supports text messaging and is offered by your carrier... for example, most us carriers will send text message to any other us carrier and a limited area in europe.
Most us carriers have some type of "work around" for example, with verizon, address the message to 6245 ("mail" on the telephone pad) and put the email address in the subject line.
Cingular "numerically codes" the sender's address, so if you receive a text message from the internet, you can respond using that numeric address.
check out http://ipipi.com and similar services... they have a numeric address that resends to any internet address.
