Re: Any pocket/pc PDA with a real on-off switch?

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Except that a cell phone WILL still give alarms and keep time if off,
though of course not if the battery is removed. I guess therefore that
even a cell phone must draw power when off?

Subject: Re: Any pocket/pc PDA with a real on-off switch?

WM5 won't address this issue specifically as it still will require
processing to service events while the unit is 'off'. Has to, to know
what time it is and whether it needs to sound an alarm or something. As
such there still will be current draw while 'off'. Should be less
though as the constant RAM refresh won't be required.

Theoretically the new memory model should allow OEMs to put an off
switch on the devices. Just like cell phones, that you can really turn
off, a WM5 PPC, could have it's battery removed (turned off) and when it
is replaced, (turned on) it will come on like coming out of a soft
reset, but with all your data and programs still intact, like out of a
soft reset. You of course would loose the 'instant on' you enjoy today.
You also wouldn't get any alarms. That is kind of obvious when you
think about it, just like you don't get phone calls when you turn yur
phone off, but it is not what folks are used to, and would initially
cause some confusion. At this point, it doesn't seem that any OEMs are
going to produce a device with a real OFF switch.
