802.11b is not obsolete yet as it is still in wide use, and most "g" ap's and hotspots have backward compatibility even if they run newer protocols... about the only problem that might come up is if you need to connect to a location that requires higher security.

afail, the protocol is the same when traveling internationally.

"hotspots" are still _very_ random and cannot be relied on to make internet connections while traveling... the tend to be luxuries when you do find them... for example, last trip, four motels and one had wifi.
