In a few cases you can drop the executable or zip into WinZip or something
similar and it will open it and you can get the appropriate cab out.
In most cases though, running the install executable on the desktop unpacks
the install files into a directory on the PC. Then it opens AS add/remove
and asks about where to install. You can cancel at that point and the
install files remain on the PC. In most cases they will be in a folder under
programs, named like the PPC app. Occasionally you may just need to search
for *.cab and limit to recent, to find it. Take a look in your program
directory on your desktop and see if there aren't some there now. If there
are multiple cabs, it may be because the app supports different devices.
Normally the right one has ARM in the name somewhere. Don't worry, if you
pick the wrong one, it just won't install.
Some program installs don't work that way and you are just out of luck,
unless the vendor can be coaxed to provide a cab.
You might also look into a program called cabinstall. It gives you a lot of
flexibility in how you want your cab install to go on your PPC. It even lets
you specify an install directory, which means you could install programs
under a program folder on an SD card, instead of all in the root.
Take a look at sites for the program you have. Some authors are providing
cabs these days because there are more and more connected devices that
aren't always associated with a PC.
