Weird problem trying to sync my Jornada 568.

Odd... It has always synced anytime! always perfectly...

And then yesterday it just refuses to.

I get this error message...

cannot start communications with the desktop computer
Winsock services could not start due to a critical error (error %d)
blah blah blah...

I have done all the obvious fixes...

Removing all active tasks from my taskbar
using MSCONFIG to shut down any running tasks as well
removing & reinstalling the latest version of activesync
plugging & unplugging the (USB) cradle in
soft & hard resetting my PDA

I have even system restored XP to 2 days ago when it last synced OK.

Apart from this annoyance the system is still working perfectly...

Any ideas will be much appreciated.
