Installing applications

I think the PocketPC way of installing applications is silly. In most cases, first you install the CAB file to your PC, and then the CAB file gets executed on the PPC. This may require admen rights, and places all sorts of folders in your program files directory.

I think the original reason for this was that there were many different processor types, and the setup file would determine which cab file was needed.

Before, I was a Palm user and it was so much easier to install applications - also very easy to beam applications to other Palm users.

Do Microsoft still think the current (and IMO, overly complicated) system is needed? Why not create a new standard? Make ActiveSync automatically open and install CAB files and keep the CAB file, in case a reinstall is needed. Or course .CAB files have a different use on PCs, which is another silly design option IMO! So a new file extension, ".ppc" or something.

I may be wrong, but I thought all PPCs had a standard processor these days?
