Check out the mfg's who are giving out the upgrade and how well they are
supporting thier products. Make a note of it. Then the next time you buy
something instead of thinking the mfg's are "greedy", when infact they could
just be less competent, not capable of seeing the future well enough, have
limited support resources, designed something that is technically impossible
to upgrade, or selling as good a product, choose a company and product that
has a better track record for compatibility, support and upgrades.
> You missed my whole point.
And you missed the whole point of a free market system. The mfg's have the
freedom to manufacture and support thier products any way they want. That's
not directly your call, but in the long run, consumers have considerable
impact on how products are designed, mfg'd and supported. You do have some
responsibility as a purchaser of a particular product. Pay attention the
next time, it's all not just based on cheep prices, slick advertising and
slick features to capture your imagination only for as long as it takes to
make the sale and run the warranty out.
A good key would be to roam around a particular mfg's web site. See how well
they continue support with downloads, firmware upgrades, drivers, etc. There
is more information available today than ever before to help consumers make
intelligent descisions in thier purchase of any product, including pocket
pc's. If one website doesn't look like they offer as much ongoing driver,
firmware and software upgrade support, factor that in to your descision as
to what to buy. In a technology as rapidly changing as pocket pc's,
continued support to me is the prime factor.
And, I would never buy a Dell and I betcha others have learned about that
from you input and the threads that are going on in this conference about
the various mfg's "upgradibility".
