The problem is not that the files fail to load (DRM or non DRM) but that
they fail regularly during reading with the message "Microsoft Reader is no
longer able to access this eBook" and a restart of the reader is necessary
to continue.

My experience is this is a problem with 2003SE only and the solution is to
have the book file in main memory.
