Hi,

Exchange Server 2003 comes with ActiveSync installed. To configure mobile
features you just turn them on and off using the Exchange System Manager,
that's ALL you need to do at the server end by default. You may also
enable/disable mobile features on a per user basis.

The users desktop has absolutely nothing to do with the process.
Yes, it is possible to configure certain mobile devices to synchronise
directly with the server.
