Just to expand on Brad's post (with which i agree) its basically becuase
your ISP will only let you send mail when dialled into their servers. i
don't know how the mobile operators do it but they get around it by using a
different smtp address somehow although it arrives shoiwing your ISP
address.

I use Tiscali in the uk but on the ipaw i'm smtp.orange.net.
