Your answer is almost correct:
Once you have updated your ROM with a new image, hard-reseting your unit
will turn back to the initial configuration of that image, but not the
factory default.
One way to get a factory default if you have any problems is to requiring an
image of the previous version to your manufacturer. In the case of HP (I use
their PDAs), they always have the most updated and the previous images
available for download, so, if something goes wrong with the new image I can
download and install the previous one.
About the camera support, the operating system in Pocket PCs is not like the
Windows you install in your desktop. In practice, you can't go to a store,
pick up a box and go home install it. The operating system is given by
Microsoft to manufacturers in a standard state. The manufacturers must
customize and configure it (even by changing parts of the source code) and
then prepare it for an specific device. During this process, they add
drivers and software needed by the device to work correctly.
It means that the only way to get Windows Mobile 2003 SE on your device is
waiting for Viewsonic to prepare that version of the operating system to the
V36, create a ROM image containing that prepared OS and give that to you to
install on your device. If they do so, they will provide you support for all
your hardware.
Hope it helps.
Cheers,
Paulo
