Thank you for your very helpful reply.

The thing is I don't actually suspect either of my cards. The slow and
jerky scrolling effect is just as prevalent on Mobi e-news which is
automatically downloaded every morning onto a different card (a 128 MB
SD card). My e-book source documents are stored on a 512 MB CF card
whilst the Mobi application proper has been re-installed all over the
show including the iPAQ file store.

However, I followed your suggestion; removed both cards and copied Mobi
Reader and several books into main memory. Ahhhhhrrrrgggg!!!!!!
Any other ideas will be gratefully appreciated.
