It sounds like you have a buggy program on your iPAQ that's causing it to
freeze when it powers on. Obviously, when it freezes, the iPAQ doesn't turn
itself off when it's meant to, in which case it eventually powers down. Best
thing to try in this situation is to uninstall suspect apps one at a time to
see if it makes a difference. That or hard reset and install apps one at a
time. Arduous process I know :( That's why I try to make a backup of my
device before installing any new software to make sure it doesn't cause
problems.
Another possibility is that one of the hardware buttons or the power button
was constantly pressed, preventing a power down - this can sometimes happen
with a tight case.
