I have just got an iPaq 2210. I have not used it with a GPS yet (see
below) but I have had similar experiences with Bluetooth connections
to my mobile (cell) phone. I use the iPaq and phone to check my
e-mail or browse the web. When it behaves itself, it is great. But
like you found, it seems to be necessary to shut it down very
carefully. If you do not then the next connection fails. The iPaq
says that it is dialling and everything looks fine on it. But if you
look at the phone, it is doing nothing and is unaware that the iPaq is
trying to use it. Sometimes I can get out of this situation by ending
running programs but the only sure way to correct the problem is a
soft boot. So the problem may be in the bluetooth software on the
iPaq.
I would like to connect the iPaq to a GPS and I am considering several
options.
1. I have a Garmin eMap which I used to connect to a Psion 5mx using
the two serial cables and a null modem. So I could look for a serial
cable for the iPaq. Not pretty but maybe cheap. This solution would
probably be a stop gap before moving to 2 or 3.
2. Buy a CF based GPS add on. A nice feature of the 2210 is that it
has a CF and an SD slot. I can use the SD for memory and the CF for
accessories. Dearer but neater than 1.
3. Buy a bluetooth device similar to yours. This has some attractions
but the reviews that I have read are not good.
Apart from cost and reliability, there are various pros and cons of 2
and 3. The bluetooth solution means the receiver and display could be
independently positioned for optimum reception and viewing. But a
disadvantage is that I have more devices to power. Also I often use
my GPS outside the car. A single item is probably easier for use when
walking.
