Thinkpad R31 user here :)
i've had a bad time installing a Bluetooth CF adapter
in my laptop, for a reason I still don't know.
I have gone through a few times uninstalling it and
then reinstalling it, it's not the hardware that is
giving trouble, it is Windows XP and the way it
handles unsigned drivers. as far as I know, Bluetooth
device drivers aren't officially signed yet...
what you could do is, if you have the IBM Update
connector installed on your system, is to try that
and see if IBM has newer Bluetooth drivers for
your R40 system. (aside from the IBM IBII)
Also, check your R40's BIOS settings for possible
Bluetooth settings, and Control Panel, and in
Hardware Manager (properties of the BT device).
I'm not sure if you will find any settings for Bluetooth
there but it's worth a try. Keep your devices at
least 1 foot away from the laptop when you try
searching for devices again, sometimes when you
keep Bluetooth enabled devices too close to each
other you put them in eachother's 'dead zone'.
hope this helps a little.. :)
