Toshiba e740 Backup Error

I have had a Toshiba e740 Pocket PC for 1.5 years now and I am having
a problem backing up my data to the local storage card. This is the
only sort of backup that seems to effectively restore my data when I
am on the road, and I usually have a backup of the backup on my home
PC for emergencies when all else fails.

Presently, the only good backup I have using the DataBackup program
was when I was still using ROM v1.0618.0409, and it is terribly
outdated as of August of last year. Whenever my batteries die or a
jolt causes a complete system reset (often), I have to resort to this
file. The address book is by far the most important thing I use and
that file needs to be up to date.

Since upgrading the ROM to v1.0623.0409 (latest), I have not been able
to perform a local DataBackup. The process gets to 99% then reports:
"Storage card had been removed. Databackup was terminated. The process
was fail." This is difficult to interpret because of the confusing
grammar, but the general idea is apparent as the file that it leaves
on the storage card top directory is only 48KB.

The storage card is a 256MB Compact Flash card made by PQI and has
performed well and gives no other known errors. I even defragmented it
using a card reader to see if that would clear up the problem to no
avail. I have stopped short of reformatting it and made a backup of it
to my home PC, but have not tested whether the data is compatible both
ways (as a conversion seems to be a part of what ActiveSync does, but
I don't know if it really does anything), but I digress. I used a
compact flash card reader for the above task.

I thought the newer ROM was supposed to clear up issues with the
Toshiba DataBackup program (as the revision record states), not create
problems. Please let me know what is going on. I have checked through
the knowledge bases and Google groups and a few people have had the
same problem with slightly different twists, but nobody has a sure
fire answer.

Toshiba PDA telephone technical support does not want to talk to me
because it is past the one year warranty period.

On a side note, I am also generating errors when doing a complete
backup of my data using ActiveSync. Aside from it taking almost an
hour, it gives errors for some mail and calendar items near the end of
the process, and when I tell it to skip them, it finishes up lightning
fast with a success message, but leaving me wondering whether the file
is any good. I wouldn't dare test it to find out. My other main issues
are poor battery performance and the complete reset problems when
subjected to a moderate jolt.

Any help with this issue will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

P.S. Sprite Backup program is able to make a successful data backup to
my storage card, but I shouldn't have to buy a third party program
when Toshiba supplies all the basic tools I should need.
