Cass from Australia describes it this way.
the operating system does schedule two
programs to wake up the PPC at midnight,
under certain conditions, as follows:
clocknot.exe - scheduled to run about every 7
days, especially if you have daily clock
alarms.
calnot.exe - scheduled to run every 7 days,
but also will be scheduled when you set up a
'recurring' calendar alarm. Note the word
'recurring', not 'repeating'. My definition,
to keep things clear, is that the former is
an calendar appointment that repeats every
day/few days at a certain time, whereas the
latter is when an alarm is set to repeat any
alarm sound until it is dismissed. When a
'recurring' calendar event is set, a
calendar.exe notification is setup for the
first alarm event, plus calnot.exe is
scheduled to run at the next midnight. When
the next midnight comes around calnot.exe
runs and sets the appointment for the next
day, using another calendar.exe event, and
also schedules another calnot.exe wake-up for
the next day's midnight. The setting of
calnot.exe to wake up at each midnight will
continue as long as there is a recurring
calendar event set. If no recurring event
will need to be scheduled over the next day,
calnot.exe will go back to its weekly
schedule, and hence no further midnight
wake-ups til then.
