Well, in response to the original poster, I can contribute my experiences
with Pocket PC Linux.

I have installed several versions of Familiar Linux on an iPaq 3630 amd an
iPaq 3850. I have tried GPE and Opie environments. At the time I tried,
Opie was a little more advanced than GPE. It is, I think, a fork of the
Zaurus software.

I have restored PPC2002 to the 3850 and given it to my GF. The 3630 still
has GPE, all I use it for is Tetris!

My current PDA is an h2210. I use this thing for fairly serious tasks,
including the normal PIM, wordprocessing, databases, PowerPoint type
presentations, tracking my sports training, amongst other tasks. If you
are keen to use a PDA for these sorts of activities, I think you'll find
the linux distros rather limited in the apps that are available (unless
those for the Zaurus can be used). Now, there are other flavours of Linux
for the Pocket PC, which I haven't tried, some requiring added disk space.

The ipkg package management system seems pretty damned good to me. If you
are keen to play with a Linux PDA, I'd recommend looking at the
commerically available Linux based PDAs.
